China to Build Freshwater Dolphin Protection Zone

China will build a freshwater dolphin protection zone in Tongling in east China's Anhui province, the only section along the Yangtze river where the endangered species of white-flag dolphin can be detected throughout the year.

Rapid deterioration in the ecological environment in the Yangtze River in recent years has gravely threatened the living surroundings of the freshwater dolphin exclusive to the river.

Experts said that the protection zone, covering some 20 hectares, boasts good-quality water favorable to the living and proliferation of the dolphins.

They believe that the zone can provide an ideal venue for dolphin.
