Senior Chinese Military Leader Meets Australian Guest

Zhang Wannian, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of China, said China is willing to join hands with Australia to ensure the long-term and stable development of bilateral ties in the new century.

In a meeting with Australian Minister for Defense Peter Reith Friday, Zhang said developing Sino-Australia relations not only confirms the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also helps the stability and prosperity in the region.

Reith said that Australia values its relations with China and is willing to deepen the bilateral cooperation.

He said that he hopes his current visit will further the relationship between the two countries and their armed forces.

Prior to the meeting, Vice Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Reith and the two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional security.
