China's Top Legislator Li Peng Meets Nepalese King

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said Friday that China will always be a "good friend, good neighbor and good partner" of Nepal.

Li told visiting King of Nepal Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev during a meeting that China attaches great importance to the good-neighborly cooperative relations with Nepal.

He noted that bilateral cooperation between the two countries in areas of politics, economy, culture, science and technology has had marked progress over the past years.

The chairman briefed the king on China's NPC system, the construction of democracy and law in the country and the development of Tibet Autonomous Region. He thanked the Nepalese side for its support and understanding on the issues of Tibet and human rights.

Birendra said that Nepal and China reached a consensus on the consolidation and development of bilateral cooperation in the new century during his current visit to China. He said he was satisfied with the result of meetings with Chinese leaders.

Li Peng and Birendra agreed to strengthen exchanges between parliaments of the two countries. The king wishes China's NPC a successful fourth session of the 9th NPC, which will be opened next week.
