Reservoir Operational in East China

A major reservoir was put into operation Thursday in the city of Ningguo in east China's Anhui Province.

The reservoir is on the Shuiyang River, a major water source for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest.

This project is a large-scale undertaking and will be used to irrigate farmland, prevent floods and provide electricity and water resources.

The 1.1 billion yuan (US$132 million) project, with a storage capacity of 940 million cubic meters, a 146-meter-tall dam with a total size of 32 square kilometers. The reservoir also boasts a normal water storage capacity of 430 million cubic meters.

The construction of the reservoir started in October 1998 and will be fully operational in October. Once completed, the project will be able to prevent floods for 450,000 people and 550,000 mu (about 36,000 hectares) farmland in the river area and the 60,000-kilowatt generator will provide an abundance of electricity for the city.
