Inner Mongolia Puts One Billion Yuan into Disaster Relief

Northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has over the past two months poured 1.09 billion yuan (about US$131 million) into blizzard relief efforts.

Of this money, 230 million yuan came from the local government, and 560 million yuan was in the form of bank loans.

The local government has stressed the delivery of fodder and the clearing of snow-blocked highways. The latest statistics available show that over 60,000 local officials and 22,800 vehicles have been used in the relief work, and 760 million kg of fodder has been transported to the blizzard-hit areas.

Besides satisfying the daily necessities of the people, another urgent task for the local government is to help local herders with the coming lambing season and prevent the spread of epidemic diseases.

At the turn of the century, 10 counties or leagues in the eastern part of the region were severely hit by snow and sand blizzards.
