Motorola Remains Top in China's Mobile Phone MarketMotorola (China) Electronics Ltd. realized four billion US-dollars-worth of sales last year, 27.7 percent more than in 1999 and remaining the leader of the country's mobile phone market.Motorola (China) bought 868 million US dollars-worth of raw materials for its production, a 58 percent rise over 1999. Moreover,65 percent of Motorola's products sold in China were manufactured domestically. Besides, the company has achieved encouraging results in research and development (R&D). Its software R&D center has become Motorola's third-biggest, after those in the US and India. Lai Bingrong, chief executive officer of Motorola (China) said that the company is confident about its cooperation prospects with China, so it decided last year to invest another 16 billion yuan (about 1.92 billion U.S.dollars) to set up the Motorola Asia Telecom manufacturing base and a semiconductor manufacturing center in this north China municipality. Motorola is one of China's largest foreign-funded enterprises, with a total investment of 28.5 billion yuan (about US$3.42 billion) by the end of last year. Its export value in 2000 was US$1.643 billion. |
