SW China Province Cracks Down Corruption

Public prosecutors in Yunnan Province, southwest China, handled 1,444 cases of corruption cases and neglect of duty in 2000, saving financial losses of up to 122 million yuan, sources said Thursday.

These cases involved 60 officials at county level or higher, and hundreds of others at lower levels, according to an official with the provincial procuratorate.

Prosecutors in the province investigated 486 cases of economic crimes in Party, judicial, administrative and economic administrative departments, involving 581 officials.

Another 454 officials were punished for corruption in state-owned enterprises, while over 240 corruption cases involving rural cadres were handled in the year.
