Green Food Industry to Expand in NE China Province

Farmers inHeilongjiang Province, one of China's main production base of grain, have recently unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its green food industry.

They expect to yield 7.9 million tons of green food, with a total value of 14 billion yuan (US$1.7 billion) by 2005, according to the plan.

The profit gained by the green food industry has promoted the growth of agriculture in the province, which suffered from drought last year, said Song Fatang, governor of Heilongjiang province.

Green food, or pollution-free food, is becoming more popular in China as a result of improving living standards, as indicated by nationwide surveys.

Although its prices are about 20 percent higher than traditional food, green food sales in the country are expected to grow dramatically. So far, over 1,000 kinds of food have been categorized as green across the country.

As a new industry, green food has been noted for its natural processing, production that does not emit pollutants, and strict quality control.
