The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Wednesday launched its 2001 edition of serial reports on sciences and society, titled "Report on the Development of Science and Technology," "Report on the Development of High Technology" and "Report on China's Strategy for Sustainable Development."

The reports, totaling about 600 pages, describe the trends in the development of science and technology in the world, major issues in the field and introduction to academic research in China.

The "Report on the Development of Science and Technology" deals with review of progress in basic science research and development in 2000, outlining its prospects and the most hot science frontiers.

The "Report on the Development of High Technology" pays special attention to the situation and prospects of research on biology and the lucrative and rapidly growing biological industry after general review of high-tech research fields. It also focuses on proposals concerning the development of high-tech research and related industries in China for the coming five years.

The "Report on China's Strategy for Sustainable Development" focuses on modernization research, the gap between China and the average developed countries in social and economic development.

The CAS plans to offer the reports to deputies of the National People's Congress (NPC) and members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) for references.

The deputies and members are going to meet in March for the annual sessions of the NPC and the CPPCC National Committee.
