Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak Cases Rise to 27 in UK

Nine new cases of foot-and- mouth disease were confirmed in Britain on Wednesday as the government promised continued support for desperate farmers.

The new outbreaks included two in Wales, two in Leicestershire and others in Herefordshire, Lancashire, Warwickshire, Essex and Devon, bringing the total number across England and Wales to 27.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair told the House of Commons on the same day that he knew farmers were facing an "appalling situation."

The total number of animals slaughtered or due to be destroyed in Britain is now believed to stand at 11,000, with 102 farms around the country under restrictions.

There were fresh fears that the disease may have crossed to Northern Ireland, after a farm in Meigh, South Armagh, which imports from a Carlisle market, was sealed off.
