"Meet in Beijing" Arts Festival to Be Held in Spring

More than 50 art troupes from both at home and broad will gather in Beijing this spring during the second "Meet in Beijing" Arts Festival scheduled for April 20 to June 1.

The festival is the continuation of a series of yearly cultural activities organized by the Chinese Government, namely the International Year of Symphonic Music in 1996, the International Year of Opera and Dance Drama in 1997, the International Year of Fine Art in 1998, and the International Year of Traditional and Folk Dance in 1999.

In May 2000, the "Meet in Beijing" Art Festival made its debut and attracted from 24 countries some 38 art groups, which gave 109 stage performances, six outdoor shows and six exhibitions.

Officials from the Ministry of Culture said today at a press conference that the arts festival will be held each year for the next five years, each focusing on different kinds of art like music, folk arts, art exposition, dance and theater.

This year's festival will be jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Beijing Municipal Government and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.
