Fiji Court Declares Military-Installed Govt InvalidThe Court of Appeal of Fiji Thursday declared the country's military-installed government invalid, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported. The court has dismissed an appeal by the military-installed government in a case concerning its legitimacy, the ABC said. The five judges have delivered their judgment in Fiji's capital Suva after deliberating for a week. They have ruled that the present government is illegitimate and said the 1997 Constitution remains the supreme law of the country, the ABC said. The court said the country's parliament was not dissolved but prorogued following the coup by George Speight and his supporters in May last year. The judgment also said a new president will have to be elected within the next two weeks.
