Construction of Shenyang Subway Expected to Set off Next YearThe subway construction in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, is to be formally carried out next year with the participation of a large Canadian enterprise. It's reported that Jean Chretien, the Canadian Prime Minister specially invited the leaders of Shenyang to Beijing for a discussion on the cooperation of subway construction during his visit to China. According to the plan, the 22.2 km-long subway running from east to west through the city center with 17 stations will draw a high investment as 6.51 billion yuan and is to be completed in six years. The subway construction was once ratified by the State Council in the early 1960s and actually kicked off in the eastern suburb of Shenyang, but was canceled for some reason or other. In 1993 the project was once again approved by the State Council but failed in the launching. The preparatory work for the latest plan has been carried out since 1998 and the project is expected to start next year. By PD Online Staff Deng Gang
