Motorola on Charges of Copyright Infringement

Motorola, world top mobile phone producer, was lately reported on charge of infringing the copyright of Chinese character input software in mobile phone production.

Beijing Higher People's Court February 27 heard representations of plaintiffs Hu Xuanhua, Hu Bin, and Dalian Hanpu Co. Ltd. on charges against defendant Motorola Computer Group for infringement on the copyright of their software products.

The complainants said that Motorola has infringed their software patent right granted August 1999 by the State Intellectual Property Office as Motorola uses their Chinese Character Stokes Input in its 14 kinds of mobile phone products. So, the accusers asked for stopping Motorola's act of infringement, make apology and pay for temporary protection charge and a compensation for the infringement of RMB 10 million yuan.

The complainants said in the court that they had talked with technicians of Motorola and had shown them their patent on the spot. Before the talk, Motorola had spent over one year on developing Chinese character input software whereas the input technique concerning their patent was used in Motorola's production a month later right after the talk. So Motorola is filed on charge of infringement through improper means.

According to Motorola, the Chinese character input software it used was developed by it's own technicians and adopted existing technology.

After the court hearing lawyers Jiang Hongyi of the complaint side said that though Motorola is a world famous enterprise they have 99% confidence in winning the lawsuit.
