Official Death Toll in Borneo Violence Rose to 469

The death toll from more than a week of savage ethnic violence in Indonesia's Central Kalimantan has risen to 469, the province's governor said on Thursday.

The official Antara news agency quoted governor Asmawi Agani as reporting the official death toll to Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri on her arrival in the provincial capital, Palangkaraya, ahead of a brief tour of the region.

Megawati said nothing before heading to the river town of Sampit, scene of most of the killings, Antara reported.
