Pakistan Deplores US Human Rights Report
Pakistan on Wednesday termed the US State Department's 2000 report on human rights as "a repeat of the report issued last year, which was a complication of allegations from unreliable sources."
A statement by the Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman said, "The report reflects a lack of understanding of the situation in the country. It is also factually inaccurate."
The report fails to acknowledge the important steps taken by Pakistan in the social and human rights spheres during the course of the past one year, the statement said.
To set the record straight, the Government of Pakistan, over the last year, implemented a number of important measures for the promotion of human rights.
"These include promulgation of the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance, the establishment of a Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, police and jail reforms, national policy and Plan of Action for elimination of child labor and establishment of a fund for rehabilitation of working children," the statement noted.
The Government and people of Pakistan are committed to the protection and promotion of human rights in the country, it said, adding that revival of the economy, assurance of fundamental rights and freedoms and strengthening of institutions to build genuine democracy, are among the highest priorities of the Government.
