Romanian President Meets Chinese State Councilor

Romanian President Ion Iliescu met visiting Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi late Tuesday. Both sides expressed willingness to promote the development of bilateral ties in the new century.

Iliescu said that Romania treasures its relationship with China, and he expects the relationship to become stronger. Iliescu stressed that Romania and China should renew and enhance substantive economic cooperation.

Iliescu, who has visited China five times before, recalled his contacts with Chinese leaders of three generations. He also praised the achievements of the Chinese opening-up policy under the leadership of President Jiang Zemin.

Wu Yi congratulated Iliescu on his re-election to the presidency, and conveyed to him a message of greeting from President Jiang Zemin.

She said that China respects Romania's choice of development based on its national conditions, and understands Romania's bid to join the European Union. Wu Yi also expressed gratitude to Iliescu on Romania's consistent observance of "One-China" policy on the Taiwan issue.

Wu pointed out that the Chinese government encourages Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in Romania and she hopes Sino-Romania economic ties could reach the same level as bilateral political ties.

Wu arrived here Saturday on a four-day visit, the last leg of her five-nation European tour, which has already taken her to Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia.
