Malaysian Navy to Buy Anti-Submarine Helicopters

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) will buy six latest anti-submarine helicopters to replace its aging WASP MK I helicopters, Bernama news agency reported Tuesday.

The decision on the purchase and helicopter type will be announced by the Finance Ministry in a week or two, Bernama said, quoting RMN chief Abu Bakar Abdul Jamal.

The proposed purchase of new helicopters would bring to 12 the number of sophisticated helicopters in the RMN fleet.

The RMN has also decided on the main and back-up artillery systems for the offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) from Germany, he said, adding the command and control system would be equipped by STN Atlas, also of Germany.

He said that however, the OPVs' guided surface-to-air missile ( SAM) and anti-vessel and anti-submarine missile systems had not been decided yet.

The RMN is making efforts to become an e-navy consistent with the present e-government concept, he said.
