Shipwreck Death Toll Rises to 46 in ChongqingThe bodies of all 46 people who died in a shipwreck on January 29 in Hechuan, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, have been recovered, according to the latest report from local sources.All 84 passengers and stewards on board the wrecked ship fell in the water and only 38 people survived, sources said. The major causes of the accident include overloading and the inability of the captain to deal with the situation properly, according to the sources. The private passenger ship ran aground on rocks when sailing from the town of Xiaohe to Dahe at around 10 a.m. on January 29. Chongqing Municipal government recently carried out compensation on victims from 5,500 to 7,000 yuan each, and ordered Hechuan to conduct boat safety investigations and examination and popularize safety awareness among local residents. In addition, the city destroyed six unsafe boats and invested 300,000 yuan to purchase three speed boats for rescue efforts in the area.
