IBM Eyes HK e-Business Market

IBM, the largest IT services provider and the number one server vendor in the world, said Tuesday it would concentrate on exploring e-business in Hong Kong.

The business strategies of IBM China/Hong Kong Ltd. will focus on offering total e-business solutions, taking leadership in Linux and providing leading edge IBM total solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Cordelia Chung, general manager of IBM China/Hong Kong Ltd., told a press briefing.

The newly appointed IBM Hong Kong chief believed though the world economy may be slowing down a little bit this year, IT spending should continue to grow.

Chung said her company, apart from helping customers build an IT infrastructure for next generation of e-business, will also invest heavily in Linux. It will invest nearly US$1 billion in Linux this year, she said.

IBM had a strong performance last year, according to IBM executives. The company's net income for 2000 was US$8.1 billion, compared with net income of 7.7 billion dollars in 1999. Its global revenue reached US$88.4 billion.
