NE China to Intensify Publicizing AIDS Prevention Knowledge

Liaoning Province in northeast China is to publicize information on AIDS prevention throughout the province, thus stopping the deadly disease from spreading further.

According the local government, at least 80 percent of urban dwellers and 40 percent of rural people will know the basics on the disease by 2002. To realize the aim, newspapers, TV stations and radio stations are required to play regular programs on precautions against getting AIDS and other venereal diseases.

Higher educational institutions and middle schools in the province are required to have courses on this as well. All the schools in Shenyang and Dalian have to provide such courses, and over 70 percent of the middle schools in rural areas are requested to start educating students about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases in the field.

Apart from these, the province will improve its system of AIDS prevention and supervising the spread. It will set up an AIDS diagnosis lab with advanced technology and equipment by 2002, and such a lab in Shenyang and Dalian by 2005. The medical institutions in counties, districts and cities should be able to diagnose the disease by 2005 as well.

These measures should help prevent the spread of AIDS via blood transfusion by intensifying supervision and improving operations of the local hospitals and clinics.

Cooperation and exchanges with foreign countries in the aspect and combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine in research and treatment will also be crucial in the prevention efforts.

Official statistics show that the province now has 112 people who are HIV-positive and six AIDS patients. The first HIV-positive person was diagnosed in 1991.
