China Unicom Expands Investment in Tianjin

China United Telecommunications Corp (China Unicom ), the second largest telecommunications provider in China, has decided to investment 1. 6 billion yuan (US$193 million) this year in Tianjin for expanding its network construction.

The investment will cover optimization of mobile phone networks, augment of capacity of long-distance calls and local calls, and enlarge access to the Internet.

The company will also improve CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile phone system, which is a digital technology that provides better quality service and reliability and is more easily adapted for Internet applications.

It witnessed rapid business growth in Tianjin, said Li Zhenping, general manager with Tianjin Branch of China Unicom, the revenue last year hit 3.74 billion yuan (US$452 million), up 90 percent than in the previous year.

China Unicom was set up in 1993 and grew rapidly with strong support from the government.

It was listed both in New York and Hong Kong last year, has garnered 20 million mobile phone users and enjoyed more than 10 percent of the domestic wireless market.

China Unicom is now involved in a wide range of businesses, from mobile telecommunications, paging and fixed telephones, to data and Internet services.
