US Urged to Stop Interfering in China's Internal Affairs Using "Human Rights"

China has urged the United States to observe the norms of international relations, correct its wrong doings and stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of so-called human rights.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made the remark Tuesday when asked to comment on the annual report on human rights issued Monday by the US State Department.

Zhang said the Chinese government has consistently respected the universal principles on human rights and actively committed itself to promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedom of the Chinese people in line with its national conditions.

After long-term and unremitting efforts, the quality of life for Chinese people has experienced unprecedented improvement, and the human rights and basic freedom they enjoy have been upgraded to an unprecedented level, Zhang said, adding that it is a fact known to all.

Falun Gong has proved to be a sheer evil cult that has brought severe harm to society by deceiving, deluding and harming people, she said. "Any government with a sense of responsibility will not adopt a laissez-faire policy on such destructive cults," she said.

Zhang said the Chinese government has banned and cracked down on Falun Gong in accordance with law so as to maintain and safeguard the basic human rights and freedom of the Chinese citizens. "The act has received firm support from all the Chinese people and has been widely applauded by the international community," she added.

She said it is quite well-known that there are serious human rights violations in the United States; yet the US government keeps silent about its own problems and meddles with other countries' internal affairs by willfully distorting the human rights situation in other countries and even openly defending evil cults that harm humankind, she said.

Zhang said that it is "totally unreasonable" and "with ulterior motives" for the US to do so, adding that it also shows the US's typical "double standards on human rights."

"China hereby expresses its strong indignation at and firm opposition to such a move by the US side," she said.
