Toe-Finger Transplant Successful in Nanjing

Chang Shanshan, an 18-year old female patient, is recovering from a finger wound and disability following a successful toe to finger transplant operation at a hospital of the Nanjing Military Area in this capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.

The three fingers on the woman's right hand were cut from the root while she was using a meat chopper last November. With only a thumb and a pinkie finger, the patient could not use her hand to hold anything.

Doctors at the hospital decided to transplant the second toe from the patient's right foot to the forefinger root. The six-hour- long operation was conducted by nine doctors on Sunday.

The transplanted toe has already resumed blood circulation, and will grow increasingly similar to her fingers, according to the doctors.
