White Lion Gives birth to Twin Cubs

A white lion in the Bifeng Gorge Ecological Zoo in the city of Ya'an, southwest China's Sichuan Province, gave birth to twin cubs on Saturday.

Sources said this is the first time that a white lion has had babies in China.

The pair of newborn lions, a male and a female, were born at 5:15 pm and 6:30 pm on February 24, and weigh 1.65 kilograms and 1.6 kilograms respectively.

Ya Mei, the mother lion, and the father lion were introduced into the zoo from the United States in 1999.

Workers at the zoo are working around the clock to take care of the mother and baby lions, sources said.

White lions originally live in Africa. There are now 10 white lions in China.

Zoo sources said that a sound ecological environment is considered a key factor that helps animals have babies. More than 30 other kinds of lions and tigers have been born in the zoo so far this year.
