Jobless Rate Decreases in Macao

The jobless rate stood at 6.4 percent from November last year to January this year in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), down 0.2 percentage points from the October-December period in the year 2000, the latest official statistics show.

The sectors reporting more employees include hotels, restaurants, entertainment, manufacturing industry and wholesale and retail sales, while the employment situation has little change in other industries, according to the Statistics and Census Services of Macao SAR government.

The estimated labor force reached 216,000 in Macao from November 2000 to January 2001, accounting for 50.1 percent of the population. The region had 202,000 employees and 14,000 jobless people in the period.

The building and manufacturing industries are still lacking employees, the source said.
