Nokia to Expand Networks in China in US$230m Deal
Nokia has won a US$230 million contract to expand digital mobile phone networks in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian.
The deal will increase the capacity of the Fujian Mobile Communications Co from 4.2 million to more than 7 million subscribers, the Finnish telecommunications group said Monday.
Deliveries for the GSM 900 and 1800 networks have begun and are expected to be completed next year, according to a statement.
Nokia has delivered equipment to the Fujian company since it began digital services in 1995.
China is Nokia's second-largest market, with investments exceeding US$1.7 billion and more than 5,500 employees, the company said.
Nokia, which is based in Espoo, just outside the capital, Helsinki, is the world's largest maker of mobile phones, with 60,000 employees and sales in 130 countries. It recorded net sales last year of 30.4 billion euros (US$27 billion).
