Romania, Russia to Enhance Traditional FriendshipChairman of the Russian Federation Council Yegor Semeonovich Stroyev signed a parliamentary cooperation protocol with his Romanian counterpart Nicolae Vacaroiu Monday, the first day of his three-day visit to Romania. At a press conference, Vacaroiu said the protocol aimed to strengthen cooperation in political, economic, scientific and cultural fields of both countries. The two leaders of parliament both put emphasis on boosting trade with each other. Vacaroiu said the trade volume between Romania and Russia has declined to about US$1 billion, only one fifth of the volume in 1989. Stroyev underscored that it is necessary to gear up the normal political and economic relations based on traditional friendship of the two peoples. He also emphasized the need for promoting cooperation between central and regional organizations of both countries. Stroyev pointed out that Russia did not oppose Romania's bid to enter the European Union (EU) and held a reserved attitude toward its intentions to join the NATO. Romania should not lose the east market, its one-time main trading partners, in the process of entry into the EU, he said.
