Town Emerges as China's Cable Production Base

A town in coastal Jiangsu Province has emerged as an important cable production base for the country.

Qidu Town near southern Jiangsu's Wujiang City, last year accounted for one sixth of the electric cable market share and one ninth of the optical cable market share of the whole country. It reported a total sales value of four billion yuan (US$480 million) last year.

The town boasts four leading cable producers; three of them are township enterprises. Hengtong Group has for five years on end ranked first in cable sales volume, and for three years ranked third in optical cable sales volume in China. It reported two billion yuan in total sales value last year.

The introduction of skilled people and experts, and active cooperation with research institutes like Shanghai-based Fudan University are believed to be the keys to the group's success.

The town started to export cable products last year.
