High-Proportion Overseas Students in France Returned Home

Sources from a working conference for Chinese overseas students in France held February 24 in Paris say that China has sent in succession 6767 visiting scholars and students to study in France since the reform and opening up in 1978.

So far a total of 4248 of them have returned home after the completion of their studies, accounting for 62.7 percent.

Present at the meeting were a total of 80 representatives from 37 student organizations that include the League of Chinese Overseas Student in France, its chapters and the Association of Chinese Overseas Scientific and Technical Personnel in France.

In recent years, China has reaped a rich harvest from sending numerous students and scholars to study abroad. Cao Guoxing, Chinese counselor to France, said that a large number of backbone intellectuals on scientific research have emerged from among those returned students and scholars. For instance, seven are now academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of Social Sciences, seven directors of the state key labs, and some have even taken up important posts in the government, or academies as well as institutions of higher learning in China.

While the students and scholars still studying in France have made great contributions to the Sino-France exchanges and cooperation on science, technology and education by actively giving lectures in China, establishing Sino-French united labs, and training graduate students. Up to now, nine returned scholars have been engaged as overseas experts to work in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and last year saw another 14 returned students and scholars back home to establish their high-tech enterprises.
