Central American Countries Want to Sign FTA with US
Central American countries have proposed to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States, the Nicaraguan press reported on Monday.
Leaders from Central American countries decided at a meeting in El Salvador on Monday to choose Salvadoran President Francisco Flores to present the proposal to US President George W. Bush, the report said.
However, Oscar Aleman, a Nicaraguan foreign trade expert, considered the proposition "a theater play," saying the United States is more interested in the establishment of the Area of Free Trade of the Americas (AFTA), on which an agreement is to be signed in 2005.
In addition to Central American countries, many other countries are also approaching the United States with similar proposals, Aleman added.
