Pakistani SC Begins Hearing on Former PM's Appeal

Pakistani Supreme Court (SC) Monday started hearing an appeal filed by former Prime Minster Benazir Bhutto and her jailed husband Asif Zardari against their conviction on charges of corruption.

According to official sources, the seven-member bench of the court has issued notices to the government about the hearing which foreign observers are allowed to witness.

It is known that Benazir's lawyers pleaded the court to probe into a recent report by the Sunday Times newspaper in London casting serious doubts on the integrity of one judge in the Benazir trial three years ago.

Local media said the SC's rule of the case was believed to bring about a final decision on whether Benazir's political career will pause for at least a few years, which will have a great impact on Pakistan's future politics.

A special high court bench of Pakistan in 1998 found Benazir and her husband guilty of misusing their authority to award a multi-million dollar contract to a Swiss firm and sentenced them to five-year jail terms along with a ban on their holding public office for seven years.
