All Proposals on Judicial Issues by Lawmakers, Political Advisors Timely Handled by Supreme Court

The Supreme People's Court has handled, on time, all proposals regarding judicial affairs that were put forward by deputies of the National People's Congress ( NPC) and members of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) at their annual sessions last year.

The proposals totaled 123, including 94 from NPC deputies and 29 from CPPCC members.

Over the past year, the supreme court has adopted a series of measures to restructure the judicial system, train judges, and make regulations and rules. Meanwhile, the supreme court has frequently sought opinions from NPC deputies and CPPCC members.

In a response to a NPC proposal on dealing with cases left over from previous years, Xiao Yang, the president of the supreme court, once told local courts to clear all the old cases by the end of 2000. He stressed that cases of the 20th century must not be taken into the 21st century.

In 2000, courts at all levels handled 138,118 overdue cases and carried out 475,690.

Beginning last year, the supreme court opened a special liaison office to receive NPC deputies and CPPCC members and inform the NPC deputies of major events concerning judicial work.
