China Succeeded in Synthesizing Superconductor MgB2

By using around one month only Chinese scientists scored a success in synthesizing the chemical compound---MgB2, a kind of new and high-quality superconductor, according to the Physics Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences February 22.

MgB2, discovered by Japanese scientists last January, was declared to have a critical temperature at 39K and considered to be another temperature superconductor after Copper Oxide and C60. So it has roused worldwide attention, and followed up with many researches on it in many countries.

MgB2 is compounded under high temperature and high pressure, and features fine luster of a metal and good conductivity in normal circumstances.

As a kind of metal-to-metal compound, MgB2 shares the common features of an alloy yet it is better than ordinary superconductors and easily to be processed. And so it promises a bright future.
