Park for Ancient Culture of South China to Be Built

China will build a park themed on the ancient culture of south China, particularly the area around Dingshi Mountain in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Sources from the committee for management of the cultural relics at Dingshi Mountain said the 152-hectare park would consist of eight zones covering cultural relics and archaeological work, prehistoric culture, and tribal life.

Construction is expected to last five years and will cost 200 million yuan (about US$24.1 million), said the sources.

The Dingshi Mountain ruins, covering an area of 5,000 sq m, are believed to be those of human beings living during the early New Stone (Neolithic) Age some 5,000 years ago. The site has been under excavation since April 1997, and was listed as one of the ten major archeological finds that year. One-fifth of the total area of the ruin has been excavated.

Many experts believe that the Dingshi Mountain ruins has the same scientific value as the Xi'an Banpo ruins found in the Yellow River Valley and Hemudu ruins in the Yangtze River Valley.
