Nepali King Leaves for State Visit to China

Nepali King Birendra left Kathmandu Monday for China on a week-long state visit at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

In a message to the nation released by the king before his departure, the king said the visit will contribute to further consolidating the friendly relations existing between Nepal and China.

The visit will also provide an opportunity for the king to see the progress China has made during recent years, the king said in the message.

Besides Beijing, the king will also visit Shanghai and Hainan and attend the opening ceremony of an economic forum for Asian to be held in Hainan province.

King Birendra has paid many visits to China since he became the king.
