This means that about one out of every 17 Chinese people owns a driving license.

Learning to drive, to speak English and to operate a computer are nowadays considered the three basic and necessary skills in modern Chinese society.

The number of Chinese drivers has kept growing by 15 percent annually since 1990. The country's passenger and cargo transportation volumes were about 6.5 billion people and 7.2 billion tons, respectively, some ten years ago. Last year, the figures amounted to 13.3 billion people and 10.2 billion tons, respectively.
