First Pan-African Conference on Human Trafficking Ends

The first Pan-African Conference on Human Trafficking Friday approved an anti-human-trafficking resolution before ending in Nigeria's capital Abuja.

In its five-point statement, the conference urged African governments and non-government organizations to take decided action in combating the evil crime by whatever means, and to pursue the protection of the human rights of victims of trafficking.

The participants, including experts and organizations from various parts of the African continent, called for international cooperation in the prosecution of traffickers and the repatriation of their victims.

The conference, which aimed at evolving an African regional initiative against human trafficking, also advocated for the rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of the illicit trade.

Earlier this week, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo urged the world leaders to cooperate in fighting against child labor and women trafficking as in the battle against slave trade.

Salim Ahmed Salim, Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), also stressed that every member state of the OAU must take active steps to solve the problems.

The five-day conference, which was organized by the Women Trafficking and Child Labor Eradication Foundation, opened on Monday and will send its resolution to the OAU for action.
