Smuggled Cigarettes Destroyed in Fuzhou

A total of 12,000 boxes (or 2.4 million pieces) of smuggled counterfeit famous-brand cigarettes seized by the local customs in Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian Province, were destroyed publicly Thursday.

Representatives from related cigarette companies in the United States, Britain and Japan attended the activity.

Last year, nearly 30,000 boxes of smuggled counterfeit famous- brand cigarettes were seized by Fuzhou Customs and destroyed publicly in the province's crackdown on cigarette smuggling.

Cigarette trafficking has become rampant in recent years and Fuzhou is a favorite dumping point for illegal cigarettes, according to local customs officials.
