HK Restoration Projects Win UN Outstanding Project Award

Two restoration projects of Hong Kong's historical buildings were presented the Outstanding Project Award Friday by representatives from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The projects, namely the restoration of the Hung Shing Old Temple and the restoration of Ohel Leah Synagogue, won the Outstanding Project Award of UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in January this year.

Secretary for Home Affairs Lam Woon-kwong said at the award presentation ceremony that the restoration of the two historical buildings represented an inspiring example of the perseverance of a small dedicated community in preserving vital landmark of their valuable and ancient heritage.

"Although a lot of time has been spent on the project, the result is remarkable and this project has set a good example for other similar projects, " said Lam.

UNESCO heritage 2000 Awards Selection judges commended the Hong Kong project entries for their success in a situation where the focus of urban redevelopment made heritage conservation very different.

The Hung Shing Temple is an important historical building originally built for praying for fishermen's safety. The century- old temple had undergone four renovation projects before it was reverted into its original design in 1999.

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation was established in 2000 to recognize outstanding efforts of private individuals, community groups and public-private partnerships, and organizations in conserving and restoring structures and buildings in the Asia-Pacific region.

Among the 26 entries received in 2000, the UNESCO Selection Panel selected a Most Excellent Project, two excellent projects, five outstanding Projects and four Honorable Mentions.
