Power Supply Restored in Northeast China
The power supply in northeast China's Liaoning Province resumed Thursday evening after an outage that lasted about 20 hours. Detailed losses are not yet available.
So far, no damage to important equipment of the province's power grid has been reported, and the total loss of electricity Thursday was estimated at 9 million kilowatt-hours.
An unexpected power outage occurred at 3:30 early Thursday morning in Shenyang, the capital city of the province. The outage affected about 80 percent of the urban area and most of the rural region, since wires were burnt out as they discharged in the foggy weather, said officials with Shenyang Electric Power Bureau.
It is said to be the most serious case of power failure in the past 50 years in the city. Only four out of all 12 power substations in the city were operating for the time being.
Around 1,200 working staff with the local electric administrations participated in rescuing the cable network.
Operation of flights and railway services were seriously affected, with some highways, and the Taoxian International Airport being closed for some time.
Many enterprises, as well as newspapers, TV stations and radio stations experienced work suspension during the power outage. Some managed to resume work on a small scale Thursday afternoon, using reserved electric generators.
Electric administrations are now still keeping a close watch on the power network, in precaution against fresh power outage.
