NMD Should Include NATO Members, Partners: Poland

The Poland State Security Committee said Thursday that the US National Missile Defense (NMD) system should include NATO members and its partners, according to the Poland News Agency.

After the second meeting of the new security committee, which was established in December, Secretary Marek Xiwiec said, "For the sake of Poland, the NMD should be expanded into a system including NATO allies, a system providing more security to NATO members, and countries cooperating with NATO, rather than composing new threats to them."

This is the first time that Poland officially expressed its attitude toward the controversial US NMD.

He said that Poland is interested in holding more talks concerning the NMD with NATO. Next week Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski will state Poland's opinion on the NMD when attending a meeting with Poland, Germany and France in Weimar, Germany.

On the establishment of a European Union Army, the security committee said Poland is willing to endorse the cause, under the condition that it not compromise the defense capability of NATO.
