Russia Applauds Future Dialogue Between Iraq and UN

Russia attaches particular importance to a political dialogue between Iraqi government and the UN Secretary-general scheduled on February 26 in New York, said Russian presidential envoy on the Mideast peace process Vasily Sredin on Thursday.

Sredin emphasized the dialogue will begin "under active assistance from Russia and a number of other states."

He reaffirmed Russia's position of abiding by relevant UN resolutions when dealing with the Iraq issue, including the lift of the decade long sanctions against Iraq.

"We are actively striving for a just political resolution to the Iraq problem on the basis of fulfilling the well-known UN Security Council resolutions," said Sredin.

Russia believes that the issue can only be settled through political means in accordance with corresponding UN Security Council resolutions, he noted.

Sredin said that Russia had condemned the unlawful air raids against Baghdad's suburbs by the US. and Britain warplanes on February 16.

"Such actions violate the UN Charter and international laws, and complicate the already tense situation in the Persian Gulf and Mideast regions," he added.
