Taiwan Investment Drops

The continuous economic decline in Taiwan has had a serious impact on the island's investment situation. The investment in January this year dropped by 50 percent, compared to the same period of last year, according to the "Economy Department" of the Taiwan authorities.

January saw only five projects each with an investment of over 200 million new Taiwan dollars (US$6 million). Among them are chemical materials, metal manufacturing and electronic machinery. Their total investment was 68.15 billion new Taiwan dollars.

The Taiwan authorities founded a coordination center to boost non-government investment in November 1997. The center is responsible for the implementation of investment projects and removing obstacles during the construction of the projects. So far, the center has promoted more than 2,200 non-governmental major investment projects.

Media here say that only when the Taiwan authorities puts an end to its turbulent political situation and gets out of its economic slump will major non-governmental investment be stimulated.
