More Efforts Needed to Push Forward Cause of Peace

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has played an active role in disaster relief, community service and blood donation for many years, Vice-Premier Li Lanqing said in a letter to the second meeting of the Seventh Council of the RCSC, which opened in Beijing Wednesday.

He urged the RCSC to make more efforts to promote the cause of peace, serve the people wholeheartedly and take an active part in international red cross activities.

RCSC President Peng Peiyun told the meeting that the RCSC will implement its constitution, push forward humanitarian activities and promote first-aid knowledge among the people nationwide.

Peng, also vice-chairwoman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee, asked departments at all levels to support China's red cross endeavors all over the country.

Representatives from local Red Cross Societies and that of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions attended the meeting.

All the participants signed their names to show the RCSC's support for Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The RCSC is the world's biggest Red Cross organization, having 32 major branches and 18 million members throughout China.
