Chinese-made High-brightness LED Passes Evaluation

China's first high-brightness light-emitting diode (LED) passed an evaluation organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing Wednesday.

The diode is capable of emitting very bright red, orange and yellow light, and the brightness of the red and orange light is as good as the best in the world, said Li Yuzhang, a researcher with the CAS' Institute of Semiconductors.

Light-emitting diode, widely used in display panels for electronic billboards, postings board at the stock exchange, and in indicators for vehicles and medical instruments, is more effective than incandescent lamps because it is more energy-efficient and has a life span of over 10 years.

Li, who leads the research group, said the market potential for the technology is huge both in and outside China.

There are over 100 plants in China assembling about 15 billion units of LED a year with imported parts, while the demand for LED in the world market exceeds 100 billion units.

The institute is planning to commercialize the technology by setting up a joint venture in cooperation with domestic companies.

He said scientists across the world are attempting to develop LED that emits bright white light, and major breakthroughs in the endeavor will lead to a revolution in lighting technology by drastically cutting global power consumption.
