Scholars Hail Jiang Zemin's Thinking on MoralityA group of scholars and experts who attended a workshop Wednesday spoke highly of President Jiang Zemin's call for "the rule of virtue," which means improving the standard of morality is vital to the administration of the country. The discussion was hosted by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. Jiang is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. In an address to a national conference on CPC's publicity work earlier this year, Jiang said that equal priority should be given to "the rule of law" and "the rule of virtue" in China's efforts to build socialism with Chinese characteristics. Jiang's remark was widely echoed nationwide. The participants of Wednesday's workshop were of the same opinion that Jiang's call is of great importance, both in theory and in practice. In managing state affairs, the rule of law and the rule of virtue are interrelated and supplement each other, they held. Liu Peng, a deputy head of the Publicity Department who presided over the workshop, said that building a sound moral system to fit the current market economy in China is a long-term strategic task and needs the common efforts of the whole of society. |
