Nepali Defense Minister Reaffirms One-China Policy

Nepali Defense Minister Mahesh Acharya said in Kathmandu Wednesday that Nepal will continue to adhere to one-China policy and support China's efforts to unify the country.

During his talks with visiting Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian, who is also vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission and a state councilor, Acharya said Nepal always holds that Tibet and Taiwan are inseparable parts of China and will not allow any anti-China activities in Nepal.

Acharya expressed confidence that Chi's visit to Nepal will further strengthen the friendly cooperation between the two countries and two armies.

Chi Haotian said on the occasion that as close and friendly neighbors, China and Nepal have had effective cooperation in the area of politics, trade and international affairs in recent years,

"The purpose of my visit is to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries to promote the military ties between the two armies," he said.

Stating that China and Nepal share identical views on pursuing peaceful diplomatic relations and on many international affairs, Chi said as the international situation is undergoing extensive and profound changes, it is important for the two countries to further enhance good-neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation and make joint efforts towards a peaceful, stable, equitable and reasonable new international order in political and economic areas.

Reiterating that Tibet is an inseparable autonomous region of China, Chi expressed gratitude to the Nepali government for its consistent support for China's unification efforts.

Chi arrived here Wednesday for a four-day official goodwill visit to Nepal at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart Mahesh Acharya. Nepal is the last leg of Chi's four-nation Asian tour, which also included Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
