Iran Ready to Expand Ties with China: Speaker

The Iranian parliament speaker said Wednesday that the ties between Iran and China have gained momentum due to the two countries' close views on many regional and global issues.

Mehdi Karrubi, Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) speaker, made the remarks during a meeting with Jiang Zhenghua, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) and his delegation.

Karrubi said that Iran and China are two important, powerful and civilized countries, noting that nothing has been able to affect the good relations between them.

He expressed pleasure with the status of Muslims in China, calling for exchange of visits by political and parliamentary delegations.

He said that Majlis has always supported the principles of Iran's foreign policy and called for expansion of ties among all countries on the basis of mutual respect and national interests.

For his part, Jiang, head of the delegation of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, called for more cooperation between the two countries in international arena.

Jiang arrived here on Monday for a five-day good-will visit at the invitation of Iran's deputy Majlis speaker and president of the Research Center of the Parliament Seyed Mohammad Reza Khatami, brother of President Mohammad Khatami.
