US Still Committed to Mideast Peace ProcessThe US Secretary of State Colin Powell said that the new US administration is still committed to promoting the Middle East peace process, Radio Cairo reported on Wednesday. This remark was made by Powell during his talks with Palestinian Minister of International Cooperation Nabil Shaath, who is now in the US for an official visit, the radio said. According to Shaath, during their discussion on the latest developments in the Mideast peace process, Powell promised the US commitment to help pursue peace between Israelis and Palestinians on the basis of UN resolutions and the principle of "land for peace", approved in the Madrid peace conference in 1991. Shaath updated the top US diplomat on Israel's continuing aggressions against the Palestinians, including sieges on Palestinian cities and assassinations of Palestinian activists. "I told Powell that the Palestinians are firmly committed to the promotion of the peace process," Shaath was quoted as saying. Powell is expected to visit the Middle East and the Persian Gulf at the end of the month, making six stops there on his first official trip abroad, to exchange views with leaders and officials in the region.
